Lightning Protection Institute – Inspection Program

LPI-IP handles LPI certification for completed installations of lightning protection systems. Using LPI-certified Master Installers, an independent engineering review of drawings, and third-party field inspection, LPI-IP provides quality assurance for the end user according to the national standards NFPA, LPI and UL.

Underwriters Laboratories Inc.

UL is an independent testing laboratory with multiple offices for field inspection of products and systems. UL has offered an inspection program for completed lightning protection systems. They offer a listing of registered lightning protection installation contractors involved in their program.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

NFPA is responsible for the national fire codes in the United States, including NFPA 780 – Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems. This document is the basis for all design and installations of complete lightning protection systems and serves as the control document for the other lightning protection standards.

United Lightning Protection Association

An association dedicated to promoting and supporting lightning protection in accordance with the nationally recognized safety standards of the LPI, NFPA and UL.

AIA Continuing Education Credits for Design Professionals

This initiative aligns with efforts of the National Weather Service (NWS), which encourages facilities to adopt comprehensive lightning protection strategies to protect patrons and employees.

Vaisala operates the National Lightning Detection Network in the United States. The system triangulates a location for every lightning strike to earth within a square kilometer area. This information is then offered for sale for various purposes, and is a tremendous resource for finding the level of lightning activity in any locale.
